The astrological signs of the zodiac are divided into fruitful/fertile or barren. One is not “better” than the other, there are different ways to work with both. This applies to most areas of life, but most generally describing signs as barren or fertile is seen when referencing haircuts, gardening, and attempts to conceive children.
Barren signs tend to thwart fertility and reduce likelihood of conception in people and animals and reduce the production of plants. Fruitful signs, as the name implies, are better at producing desired results that barren signs prohibit. However, if the goal is to reduce fertility and odds of conception and make hair and plants such as lawn grass grow slower, then one wants to utilize barren signs.
Sometimes this concept is combined with the waxing and waning Moon cycle. For example, if one wants hair or plants to grow faster or stronger, one would want to plant or get a haircut while the Moon is waxing (increasing in light; the period between the New and Full Moons) in a fruitful sign. To slow growth or dry something up, plan activities when the Moon is waning (decreasing in light; the period between the Full and New Moons) in a barren sign.
- Barren Signs: Gemini, Leo, Virgo
- Semi-Barren Signs: Aries, Capricorn, Aquarius
- Fruitful Signs: Taurus, Cancer (most fruitful), Pisces
- Semi-Fruitful Signs: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius
In a natal chart, your odds of bearing children and the conditions of conception, child birth and child rearing are shown by the 5th house. Planets in the 5th house obviously exert the strongest influence, but every chart has a 5th house and you can look to the sign that is on the cusp of the 5th house for clues.
For example, in the image below we see that the 5th house line starts in the sign of Virgo. Virgo is a barren sign and would show either there are no children or there are obstacles or limitations to conceiving. Mercury is the planet that rules the sign of Virgo, so we can look to the condition of Mercury in the natal chart for more detailed information.
